TEMED (N, N, N’, N’-tetramethylethylenediamine) is a co-initiator in polymerization reactions in combination with ammonium persulfate. In the presence of ammonium persulfate, TEMED acts as a catalyst to accelerate the polymerization reaction by promoting the formation of free sulfate radicals from ammonium persulfate. which are highly reactive species that can initiate the polymerization process.
The mechanism of the TEMED-Ammoium persulfate (APS) system involves the oxidation of TEMED by APS to produce nitrogen-centered radicals and sulfate radicals. The nitrogen-centered radicals react with the monomers to initiate the polymerization process, while the sulfate radicals propagate the chain reaction.
